Embark on a legendary journey to the Roof of Africa as you ascend Mount Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route—one of the most time-tested and accessible trails to Africa’s highest peak. Popularly known as the Coca-Cola Route, this trail offers the rare comfort of overnight stays in mountain huts, making it ideal for travelers who prefer a structured, indoor accommodation experience in the wild.
Over the course of five days, you’ll hike through five distinct ecological zones—from tropical rainforest to alpine desert to arctic summit. Each day unfolds with breathtaking scenery, unique flora and fauna, and the unwavering support of a professional trekking team. Your ultimate goal: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, where the air is thin, the sunrises are glorious, and the sense of triumph is unmatched.

After an early breakfast at your hotel, meet your guide for a detailed trek briefing. Then, drive through lush banana and coffee farms en route to Marangu Gate (1,860m), Kilimanjaro National Park’s eastern entry point. After registration, begin your ascent through the shaded rainforest where giant ferns, moss-draped trees, and colorful birds create a mystical setting. You may spot blue monkeys or the shy black-and-white colobus monkeys along the trail.
Altitude Gain: 1,860m to 2,700m
Distance: 8 km | Duration: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Tropical Rainforest
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Mandara Hut (Shared dorm-style hut)
Today’s trail begins with a gradual climb through thinning forest, soon opening into moorland and heath—marked by towering giant heathers, senecio, and lobelia. With each step, the air becomes thinner, and the views more dramatic. If skies are clear, you’ll see both Mawenzi (5,149m) and Kibo (5,895m), Kilimanjaro’s twin volcanic peaks.
Arrive at Horombo Hut, located on a plateau with stunning sunset views over the Maasai Steppe. Prepare for cooler temperatures as you ascend beyond 3,500m.
Altitude Gain: 2,700m to 3,700m
Distance: 12 km | Duration: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Heathland & Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Fuel up for a long but beautiful walk across the high alpine desert. Today’s route is more barren but awe-inspiring, crossing the vast Saddle—a wind-swept lunar landscape between Mawenzi and Kibo. With minimal vegetation, you’ll feel the raw, elemental power of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes.
Reach Kibo Hut (4,700m) in the early afternoon. The atmosphere is quiet and serious, as trekkers prepare for the final push. Rest, hydrate, and enjoy a hot early dinner before turning in for a few hours of sleep. Your summit bid begins just after midnight.
Altitude Gain: 3,700m to 4,700m
Distance: 9 km | Duration: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Summit Day. Wake just before midnight and set off under the stars for the toughest but most rewarding part of your trek. The route begins on rocky switchbacks leading up to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) and continues along the crater rim to Stella Point (5,756m). Push onward to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa.
Watch the sun rise over the glacier-capped roof of the continent, capturing a moment that words cannot describe. After a short celebration and photos, begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a rest and then continue to Horombo Hut for the night.
Altitude: 4,700m → 5,895m → 3,700m
Distance: 6 km ascent | 15 km descent
Duration: 6–8 hours up | 5–6 hours down
Habitat: Arctic zone to Alpine desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Your final trekking day begins with a celebratory breakfast before descending back through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,700m). Upon arrival, sign out and receive your climbing certificate—green for Gilman’s Point or gold for Uhuru Peak.
Bid farewell to your trekking team and transfer back to Arusha or Moshi, where a warm shower and cozy bed await.
Altitude Loss: 3,700m to 1,700m
Distance: 20 km | Duration: 4–5 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Accommodation: Tour ends (hotel night optional upon request)
