A safari in East Africa is not just a vacation — it’s a sensory awakening. From golden sunrises over the Serengeti to dusky rivers in Uganda and the wild heartbeats of Tarangire’s elephant herds, this journey calls for thoughtful preparation. And it all begins with what you pack.
At Eagle Soul Adventure, we believe in traveling light — not only for ease, but for deeper presence in the wild. Below is your complete, expert-approved packing guide for safaris across Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
East Africa’s safari circuit isn’t one-season-fits-all. Your packing choices should reflect both the weather and weight restrictions (especially on bush flights — usually 15 kg per person).
General Weather Guidelines:
Safari clothing is about function, breathability, and respect for the wild. Leave the bright colors behind — think earthy tones: olive, tan, beige, brown, and dusty green.
Core Clothing:
3–4 lightweight, long-sleeved shirts (sun & insect protection)
2–3 breathable safari t-shirts
2–3 pairs of durable trousers or safari pants
1–2 pairs of shorts or loose-fitting pants
1 fleece or insulated jacket (essential for morning drives)
1 light sweater or pullover
1 rain jacket or poncho
1–2 sets of sleepwear
Breathable, moisture-wicking underwear
A swimsuit (many lodges have pools)
1 casual outfit for dinners at camp
Buff, scarf, or bandana (protects from sun, wind, and dust)
❌ Avoid black, navy blue (tsetse fly magnets), and white (dust shows quickly).
❌ No camouflage — it’s reserved for military use and may be restricted at borders.
East Africa’s terrain is varied — from sandy plains to forest trails.
1 pair of lightweight, closed hiking shoes or safari boots
Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers
Flip-flops or sandals for evenings and showers
3–4 pairs of good socks (quick-dry or merino preferred)
Sun in the bush is strong even on cloudy days. Don’t skimp on protection.
Wide-brimmed hat or safari cap with neck flap
Sunglasses (polarized ideal for game viewing)
High SPF sunscreen (50+)
Aloe or after-sun lotion
Lip balm with SPF
Most quality camps provide basic toiletries. Still, it’s wise to bring your personal favorites in small travel-sized containers.
Essentials to Pack:
Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss
Deodorant (unscented if possible)
Small shampoo & conditioner
Antibacterial hand gel
Face wash, moisturizer, and wet wipes
Lip balm
Sanitary products (if applicable)
Hairbrush or small comb
Small nail clippers
Contact lens solution (if needed)
Note: Many lodges offer laundry services, but due to local culture, underwear may not be washed. You’ll find soap in your room to handle this yourself.
Safaris take you deep into the bush. Access to pharmacies or hospitals may be limited.
All prescribed medication (in original packaging)
Anti-malarials (consult your doctor)
Motion sickness pills
Painkillers (e.g., ibuprofen or paracetamol)
Allergy meds or antihistamines
Diarrhea treatment (Imodium, activated charcoal)
Rehydration salts
Blister plasters and basic first-aid
Mosquito repellent (DEET or picaridin)
We believe in unplugging, but let’s be honest — East Africa is wildly photogenic.

Charging cables + travel adapter (Type G plug for Kenya & Tanzania)

📵 Drones are banned in most parks unless you have a special permit. Leave it at home.
Soft duffel bag (no hard suitcases — they don’t fit in bush planes)
Daypack or small backpack for game drives & short walks
Dry bag for electronics during boat safaris or rainy days
Mesh laundry bag for used clothes
Packing cubes (a game-changer for staying organized)
Passport + printed visa/e-visa confirmation
