In central Uganda, a conservation miracle is quietly unfolding. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary once a vision born from crisis is now a flourishing refuge for one of Africa’s most threatened icons: the rhinoceros. Once wiped from Uganda’s wilderness due to rampant poaching and habitat loss, rhinos are now making a slow but powerful return. And Ziwa is at the heart of that comeback.
Whether you're a wildlife enthusiast, a conservation supporter, or a curious traveler, a visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary offers more than just wildlife encounters,it gives you a front-row seat to Uganda’s greatest wildlife comeback story.
Uganda once teemed with both black and white rhinos. But by the early 1980s, these magnificent animals had disappeared entirely from the wild. In response, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 1997 through a partnership between Rhino Fund Uganda and the Ugandan government. Its mission? To restore the nation’s rhino population and reintroduce rhinos back into Uganda’s national parks.
Today, Ziwa is the only place in Uganda where rhinos can be seen in the wild, and it plays a vital role in restoring balance to the country’s ecosystems and Big Five safari experiences.
Located about 170 km north of Kampala, Ziwa spans over 70 square kilometers of protected savannah, acacia woodland, and wetland habitats. It is currently home to over 30 Southern White Rhinos, each closely monitored and cared for by a dedicated conservation team.
But it’s not just about rhinos. The sanctuary also supports:
Over 300 bird species (including the elusive shoebill stork)
Antelope, warthogs, bushbucks, and even the occasional leopard
Beautiful nature trails, waterholes, and scenic viewpoints
The signature experience at Ziwa is the rhino tracking walking safari,a rare opportunity to approach these gentle giants on foot, guided by trained rangers. It’s intimate. It’s raw. And it’s unlike any other wildlife encounter in East Africa.
As you walk through the bush tracking fresh prints and dung, you'll learn about:
Rhino behavior and habits
Conservation history and challenges
Anti-poaching efforts and the future of Uganda’s wildlife
This is wildlife tourism at its best authentic, responsible, and transformative.
Tourism funds from your visit directly support breeding programs, ranger patrols, veterinary care, and conservation education.
