Mount Kilimanjaro isn’t just a climb—it’s a spiritual calling. And among the seven official routes to its icy summit, one trail remains quietly majestic, often overlooked but brimming with secrets, solitude, and sheer alpine beauty: the Shira Route.
As the original western approach before Lemosho took the spotlight, Shira is the mountain's elder path—a trail that carries history in its silence, wildness in its winds, and challenge in its elevation. Let Eagle Soul Adventure guide you deep into this lesser-known climb that starts above the clouds and journeys through one of the most ancient parts of Kilimanjaro.
Rarely used = fewer crowds, more peace.
Begins at high altitude, 11,800 ft (3,600 m) = stunning views from day one.
Crosses the entire Shira Plateau, a vast and wild high-altitude expanse.
Ideal for photographers, acclimatized trekkers, and those seeking raw adventure.
Though similar to the Lemosho Route, the Shira Route begins with a high-altitude vehicle drop-off, skipping the rainforest zone and launching straight into the moorland. That’s what makes it both breathtaking and challenging: the elevation gain is immediate, demanding that climbers be in strong health and ready to acclimatize quickly.
Total Distance: 56 km / 33 miles
Duration: 6, 7, or 8 days (we recommend 7 or 8 days for best acclimatization)
Accommodation: Mountain tents (private camping)
Success Rate:
6 Days: ~55%
7 Days: ~75%
8 Days: ~85%
Difficulty: Moderate–High (due to high starting altitude)
Day 1: Shira Gate to Simba Camp
Start Elevation: 11,800 ft (3,600 m)
End Elevation: 11,800 ft
Distance: 4 km / 2 miles
Hiking Time: 1–2 hours
Habitat: Heath
After a 4-hour scenic drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate, we ascend by vehicle up the slopes of Kilimanjaro to Shira Ridge. The hike begins with stunning views across the plateau. Expect rare plant species, wide open skies, and your first taste of mountain air at altitude.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Shira 2 Camp (via Shira Cathedral)
Elevation: 11,800 ft → 12,500 ft
Distance: 6 km / 4 miles
Hiking Time: 2–3 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today is designed for slow-paced acclimatization. You’ll hike across ancient lava flows and moorlands, stopping to marvel at the Shira Cathedral, a dramatic rock formation that dominates the plateau. The views of Kibo Peak will begin to open up to the east.
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Shira 2 to Lava Tower: 12,500 ft → 15,190 ft (4–5 hrs)
Lava Tower to Barranco: 15,190 ft → 13,044 ft (2–3 hrs)
Total Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Habitat: Alpine Desert
This is a key acclimatization day. You ascend to Lava Tower, a giant volcanic plug, before descending to Barranco Camp through the magical Senecio Forest. Though you sleep at a similar elevation, the exposure to higher altitude strengthens your body’s oxygen adaptation.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 13,044 ft → 13,106 ft
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today begins with the Great Barranco Wall, a thrilling 900 ft scramble that rewards climbers with sweeping vistas. It’s non-technical but dramatic. After crossing valleys and ridges, you reach Karanga Camp, nestled on a mountain slope above the clouds.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 13,106 ft → 15,331 ft
Distance: 4 km / 2 miles
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The air gets thinner and the terrain gets steeper. After joining the Mweka Trail junction, we make the final push to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. You'll eat early, sleep early, and prepare mentally for the challenge of summit night.
Day 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
Barafu to Uhuru: 15,331 ft → 19,341 ft (6–8 hrs)
Uhuru to Mweka Camp: 19,341 ft → 10,065 ft (4–6 hrs)
Total Distance: 17 km / 10 miles
Habitat: Arctic → Rainforest
This is the moment. Around midnight, we begin the summit push, navigating switchbacks under a starlit sky. At Stella Point, the sun rises behind Mawenzi Peak, and finally, we reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the African continent.
After soaking in the summit magic, we descend past Barafu to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 10,065 ft → 5,380 ft
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your knees may ache, but your heart will be full. After descending through the misty rainforest, you’ll arrive at Mweka Gate, where certificates await and your journey into the clouds comes to a celebratory end.
