Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Welcome to the mystical highlands of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where ancient volcanoes touch the clouds and the last remaining mountain gorillas roam in peaceful silence.
Situated at the meeting point of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, this jewel of East Africa is one of the few places on Earth where you can walk in the shadows of giants both gorillas and mountains.

Climate

Mgahinga has a cool, mountainous climate due to its high elevation (2,200–4,000 meters above sea level).

Getting There

By Road:

  • From Kampala: approx. 8–9 hours
  • From Kigali, Rwanda: 3–4 hours (very popular route)
  • Roads are scenic, passing through rolling hills, small villages, and fertile highlands.

By Air:

  • Domestic flights from Entebbe or Kampala to Kisoro Airstrip, located about 14 km from the park.
  • From Kisoro town, a short drive brings you to the park gate.

Park Attractions

1. Mountain Gorillas – The Nyakagezi Family

Mgahinga is home to the famous Nyakagezi Gorilla Family, known for being calm, playful, and incredibly photogenic. Standing face-to-face with them is a soul-stirring moment one that stays with you for life.

2. Golden Monkeys

This is one of the few places in the world where you can track endangered Golden Monkeys, known for their orange fur and quick movements through bamboo forests.

3. Virunga Volcanoes

Mgahinga embraces three magnificent volcanoes:

  • Mount Muhavura (4,127 m)
  • Mount Gahinga (3,474 m)
  • Mount Sabinyo (3,669 m)

They form part of the legendary Virunga Range Mountains with history, power, and breathtaking beauty.

4. Ancient Batwa Culture

The Batwa people are the original forest keepers. Their stories, songs, and forest skills reveal the deep connection between humans and nature.
