Rising majestically above the rolling savannas of Arusha National Park, Mount Meru (4,566m) is a striking dormant volcano that offers one of East Africa’s most scenic and wildlife-rich trekking experiences. Often overshadowed by its taller neighbor, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru delivers an unforgettable adventure—ideal for acclimatization or as a standalone summit challenge.
Unlike other mountain treks, the Meru route begins as a walking safari through forests and meadows alive with giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, and bushbucks. As the trail ascends, you’ll traverse lush rainforests, alpine heaths, and exposed ridgelines, culminating in a dramatic sunrise summit with panoramic views of Kilimanjaro and the Meru Crater Rim.
With overnight stays in well-equipped mountain huts, meals prepared by a trekking chef, and expert guidance from certified mountain guides and armed park rangers, this 3-day expedition blends the thrill of high-altitude trekking with raw immersion in nature.
Stay in high-end lodges and tented camps with comfort and stunning views.

Your adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha and a scenic 45-minute drive to Momella Gate, the entrance to Arusha National Park. After registration and a detailed trek briefing, you'll be introduced to your support team: an armed ranger (required for safety), professional guide, cook, and porters.
The trek begins through lush montane forest and open meadows, offering fantastic chances to spot zebras, giraffes, dik-diks, buffalo, and colobus monkeys up close—making it feel more like a walking safari than a mountain ascent.
After crossing the Ngarenanyuki River and stopping near a lovely waterfall, you'll reach Miriakamba Hut by late afternoon. Enjoy a warm shower (bucket style), hot dinner, and sunset views over the forest canopy and distant plains.
Accommodation: Miriakamba Hut (Shared Mountain Hut)
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Highlights: Wildlife sightings, rainforests, Ngarenanyuki River, waterfall, ranger-guided trek
After breakfast, begin your gradual ascent through changing vegetation—from misty montane forests into open heathland. The well-maintained trail follows a dramatic ridge, revealing panoramic views of Mount Meru's crater walls and the Ash Cone below.
By midday, you'll arrive at Saddle Hut, perched in a scenic alpine meadow between Meru’s twin ridges. After a hot lunch, relax or take an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m). From its summit, enjoy incredible views of the crater rim, the Maasai Steppe, and Mount Kilimanjaro looming to the east.
Dinner is served early, followed by a detailed briefing for the early morning summit attempt. Head to bed early—summit day begins before dawn.
Accommodation: Saddle Hut (Shared Mountain Hut)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Highlights: Crater views, Ash Cone, ridgeline walk, acclimatization hike to Little Meru
You’ll wake around 12:30 AM for light refreshments (tea, biscuits) before beginning your summit ascent at 1:30 AM. The trail climbs steeply via Rhino Point (3,800m) and Cobra Point (4,350m)—a pre-dawn scramble over narrow ridges and volcanic rock with headlamps lighting the way.
As dawn breaks, you’ll reach Socialist Peak (4,566m)—Mount Meru’s highest point—just in time for sunrise over Kilimanjaro, which appears as a floating silhouette above the clouds. You’ll also witness dramatic views of the Ash Cone, Mount Meru Crater, and endless horizons across northern Tanzania.
After celebrating at the summit, begin your descent to Saddle Hut for a hot brunch and short rest. The trek continues back to Miriakamba Hut, and eventually down to Momella Gate, where your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to Arusha.
